All-in-One Leaf Guard Systems VS Advantage Gutter Guard®
September 17, 2025

Are you looking for a way to simplify your life and skip the hassle of cleaning your gutters?
Many people have found that leaf guards really do work. But are all leaf guards truly top-tier gutter protection across the board? What are the upsides and downsides of all-in-one gutter systems? How does a leaf guard compare to a gutter guard? And can you really trust the lifetime clog-free guarantee that typically comes with them?
Leaf guard gutter systems can simplify life. In this article, we will discuss these questions and more to help you determine which leaf guard is truly the most effective type of gutter guard.
The Purpose of a Leaf Guard

The ultimate goal of a leaf guard isn’t just keeping gutters clog-free. It is controlling water flow.
Every rainstorm, thousands of gallons of water fall on your roof. The role of a gutter is to catch rainwater and carry it away from your home and its foundation. However, clogged, leaking, detached or unlevel gutters won’t carry water away effectively. In fact, these problems often result in water overflow, which, in turn, results in wood rot, soil erosion, flooded basements, and eventually foundation damage, among other issues.
One of the most common causes of water overflow is clogged gutters. While gutters can be cleaned manually, few people have the time and ability to clean their gutters often enough to prevent clogs.
Therefore, the invention of leaf guards. A top tier leaf guard will not only eliminate the need to clean your gutters, but also proudly protect the home from water damage by controlling water flow.
Types of Leaf Guards
There are several types of leaf guards on the market today. In previous articles, we have focused on the method in which debris is kept out of the gutter. For example there are leaf filters, gutter mesh screens, traditional screens, solid gutter guards etc., that can all be called a leaf guard. We will briefly touch on this topic, however for a more in depth discussion about solid leaf guards vs mesh leaf guards, see the article: Gutter Screen vs. Guard ( https://guttercoverkc.com/gutter-screens-vs-advantage-gutter-guard/ ) In that article, you will notice that in our 24 years experience, a solid leaf guard has been proven to be more effective and dependable than leaf filters and screens.
That is why this article focuses on the differences between solid leaf guards on the market today. We will compare all-in-one seamless gutter systems vs two-piece gutter systems. We will discuss the pros and cons of each.
All-In-One Leaf Guards

Definition: An all-in-one or one-piece Leafguard® gutter system works by using a surface tension gutter guard design that is both a gutter and a gutter guard all-in-one (In other words, it must be purchased together and comes as one unit). It has a solid top and uses the curve of the top section to direct water into the attached gutter.
Pros
- Includes both gutter and guard: Many people like the idea of a pre-packaged product. The gutter and leaf guard are one and the same.
- Seamless, top and bottom: Additionally, there are no seams that can leak. The idea of purchasing a single item that is totally ‘seamless’ has a real draw.
- Clog Free Guarantee: The leaf guard design is a solid cover that will keep leaves, pine needles and other debris out of the gutter. It should come with a lifetime, no-clog guarantee.
Cons
While the design is truly simple and uncomplicated, there are unfortunately some downsides to an all-in-one leaf guard design. We will break them down into 3 categories: 1) Functionality 2) Appearance, and last, but not least, 3) Cost
Functionality:
There are functional disadvantages to the one-piece leaf guard system.
Inadequate Gutter Size:
In order to make the gutter and leaf guard one-piece the size of the gutter is cut down to 5 inches or even less. The reality is that many roof sections require 6 inch gutters. In some instances even 8 inch gutters may be needed. When a gutter is undersized for the volume of water it receives from the roof, water overflow is inevitable.
Lack of Adaptability:
Gutters cannot square directly with a roofline to function properly. The rule of thumb is that they must be sloped 1/4” for every 10 feet of gutter. This way the water runs towards the downspout. When there is a long section of gutter, the gutter may be an inch or more below the roofline. This is fine for a regular gutter. But if a solid leaf guard is that far away from the roofline there are often 2 problems:
- The water can start to run behind the all-in-one leaf guard system and damage the fascia it is attached to.
- Rain water can overshoot the leaf guard and cause water damage to the soil and foundation below.
Low Durability:
One-piece leafguard installation often uses plastic brackets to attach to the home’s fascia. This is problematic, especially for long runs of gutters. Gutters face extreme temperatures that plastic has a difficult time enduring. Winter time brings ice and snow that sits on top of the leaf guard gutter system. This weight can eventually detach or even break the plastic brackets from the fascia. This may go unnoticed for a while, allowing water to leak behind the leaf guard system and cause water damage to your home.
Ill-Prepared for Storms:
Large hailstones (as we often have in the midwest) can damage even the most durable leaf guards. When a leaf guard is one-piece, this means that not just small sections of the leaf guard must be replaced, but the entire long run of leaf guard and gutter. This can certainly increase the cost and material waste in case of storm damage.
Appearance:
As mentioned above, an all-in-one leaf guard must follow the gutter in sloping. This means that on long sides of the home, the leaf guard system will usually look crooked. It also means less design flexibility since the one-piece guard must be the same color and material.
Increased Cost:
Logically, the cost of a one-piece leaf guard system is higher because it is both a leaf guard and a gutter.
- If a section is damaged in a storm, you will need to replace the entire leaf guard system, gutter and guard.
- If your existing gutters are in good repair, they don’t need to be replaced. So purchasing a one-piece leaf guard system wastes the perfectly good gutters while costing you a pretty penny.
- When compared to buying gutters and a retrofit leaf guard separately, it is still more expensive. This is because of additional marketing factors. So while it might at first seem like a nice packaged deal, you are spending more money upfront.
Not So Environmentally Friendly:
Compared to other solid leaf guard systems, there is more wasted material, including some non-recyclable materials.
- Wasted Material:
- Since one-piece leaf guard systems require old gutters (existing gutters) to be replaced, often perfectly good gutters go to waste. This is a lot of wasted material.
- Additionally, if just 1 foot of a one-piece leaf guard system is damaged in a storm, the entire section must be removed and replaced. It is not uncommon for this to be 30-100 feet of material.
Plastic Components:
Finally, not all parts of the all-in-one leaf guard system are made of recyclable materials. The use of plastic brackets isn’t ideal for the environment.
All-In-One Leaf Guard Pros and Cons Summary

The picture above is a regular 6-inch gutter next to a 6-inch Leafguard® Gutter Guard System. Although the Leafguard ® Gutter is called a 6-inch gutter, it is much smaller than a regular 6-inch gutter.
All-in-one leaf guards do prevent clogs and have a life-time clog guarantee.
These are strong positives. However, they are not the top-tier gutter guard because they aren’t able to control water flow to the degree necessary, especially with longer sections of gutter, and may result in water damage to the home. Additionally, they are more expensive and less environmentally conscious than two-piece leaf guard systems.

Think of all-in-one systems / Leafguard ® this way:
A one-size-fits-all clothing item means that it will cover anyone’s body. This means that it is convenient if you are looking for an emergency, functional item of clothing. However, it likely won’t look as good, or be as comfortable, as a piece of clothing custom-made for you.
Like that item of clothing, a one-piece leaf guard system can’t be customized to the specific needs of your home. While it might prevent clogs, it isn’t the ideal fit, and for this reason, it may be problematic. In fact, in some cases, it might even be the cause of the water damage you are trying to prevent.

Advantage Gutter Guard®: A Two-Piece Leaf Guard System

Definition: Advantage Gutter Guard® is a solid gutter guard installed in sections on top of an existing or newly installed gutter. It is attached to the gutter and fascia with a heavy-gauge aluminum bracket. It has a solid top and uses the curve of the top section to direct water into the gutter below.
Pros:
Clog Free Guarantee:
The Advantage Gutter Guard® leaf guard design is a solid cover that will keep leaves, pine needles and other debris out of the gutter. It comes with a lifetime, no-clog guarantee. Saving customers’ time by eliminating the hassle of clogged gutters.
Adaptable:
A two-piece leaf guard connects the roof and the gutter. Therefore it enables a smooth flow of water from the roof directly to the gutter.
- No chance of water going behind the fascia or overflowing.
- Fits any gutter size, so 6 inch, 8 inch – even 10 inch gutters are possible. (We have actually needed to install 10 inch gutters before due to a water volume issue. And because of the flexibility of Advantage Gutter Guard ® we were able to also protect that huge piece of guttering.)
- Correct sloping is possible even on extremely long sections. This means the leaf guard continues to look level to the naked eye, while the gutter and fascia wood behind it remain protected and their function is maximized.
Lower Cost:
A two-piece leaf guard can be placed on existing gutters that are in good condition. However, even when purchased with new gutters, the cost is typically more affordable.
Attractive:
Connecting the roofline and gutter adds a beautiful clean line to what originally would be ignored. Gutters with a two-piece leaf guard can even become a centerpiece by adding copper gutters with a leaf guard that compliments the roof. Check out some of our favorite combinations in our portfolio. https://guttercoverkc.com/portfolio/
All Aluminum:
100% recyclable heavy gauge aluminum, including brackets. Fortifying the entire guttering system to hold up in all weather – including ice and snow. https://guttercoverkc.com/gutter-guards-strengthen-gutters/
Storm Damage:
The fact that it is installed in sections means that if there is a small section damaged from a hail storm, only that small section needs to be replaced. Saving money and materials.
Environmentally Friendly:
Old gutters that are in good condition don’t need to be replaced – saving lots of material. Additionally, with Advantage Gutter Guard® all guttering and leaf guard material are made of 100% recyclable heavy gauge aluminum. So if it does ever need to be replaced, it can be recycled.
Cons
Not Seamless:
The leaf guard is installed in sections. Although this is an advantage functionally in every way (See “Storm Damage” pro, above, for example), it is visibly evident that it isn’t one continuous piece. The gutters, however, are seamless. Which means reduced chances of leaking would never be a concern.
New Gutters Are Add-ons:
When new gutters are needed to replace damaged old gutters, they will have to be purchased in addition to the initial cost of the leaf guard.
Do Leaf Guards Really Protect a Home for Life From Gutter Problems?

We can’t speak for all leaf guards because there are just too many companies and specific products. However, Advantage Gutter Guard® by Gutter Cover KC™ is a two-piece leaf guard that truly keeps your gutters protected for life from clogs. As evidenced by our 12+ years of third-party reviews (check us out on Google) and our 25+ years in business, our company stands behind its no-clog guarantee.
However, it’s not just a no-clog guarantee that is the goal. The goal is to proudly protect the home from rain water damage. This means the leaf guard must…
- Prevent gutter clogs.
- Control rainwater.
While a one-piece leaf guard can keep leaves and pine needles out, the design is often not adaptable enough to fully protect the home from other gutter problems and water damage.
On the other hand, the two-piece leaf guard – Advantage Gutter Guard®, keeps your home not only clog free, but worry free. Our proprietary system is guaranteed to keep your gutters clean, and its design will control your rainwater.
